A plausible mechanism needs evidence about reproductive outcomes, not just a picture of an attractive flower. A result for one species should not be generalized to all organisms.

Empirical reading cards: the hedgerow study compared insect-excluded and open flowers using randomized blocks and measured fruit set; effects differed by plant species. Yellowstone observations document wolves cooperating in care of young. Read the source results before selecting a plant comparison: quote or transcribe only your chosen small result with treatment and species labels, and do not invent percentages.
Keep actual observations, published findings and invented model cases labeled separately. If a source or required equipment is unavailable, pause that part with a teacher; do not invent results.

- Read the study’s results and select one species with an open versus excluded comparison. Record outcome, treatment and any stated limitation.
- Sketch a flower with anther, stigma and a visitor path; explain how pollen transfer can enable fertilization and seed formation.
- Read the wolf account; link a specific care behavior to young receiving protection or food.
- Write separate evidence–mechanism–outcome chains for the plant and animal.
- Explain why bagging could have effects beyond excluding insects and why observations of care alone do not quantify its causal benefit.

Access, support and extension
Offer read-aloud support, labeled diagrams, larger print or an oral/recorded explanation while preserving the scientific reasoning. A partner or teacher can handle physical manipulation while the learner plans, records and interprets. Use a teacher-provided measured dataset only when its provenance and limitations are explicit; it does not replace conducting an investigation when that is the assessed practice. For greater independence, remove prompts and ask learners to compare a second explanation or test another justified revision.
