Cellular respiration involves breaking and forming bonds. Breaking a bond requires energy; forming a bond releases energy. An overall reaction can release usable energy when forming the product bonds releases more than is required for the reactant changes. Some energy supports cellular work through intermediate processes and some is dispersed as heat.

Net matter model: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂ → 6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O. Invented energy-accounting analogy: required bond-changing input 100 units; product-bond formation releases 140 units; net release 40 units. These values are teaching tokens, not measured bond energies or an ATP-yield calculation.
