Build the idea

Organisms rearrange atoms from food and other inputs to make new molecules. Sugars provide carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Amino acids also contain nitrogen, and some contain sulfur, so additional sources are required. Building complex molecules requires energy as well as matter; atoms do not change element identity in these biochemical reactions.

Original atom-accounting case: a proposed building block contains C₂H₅NO₂. Available sugar-derived fragments contain only C, H and O. A separate nitrogen-containing nutrient source is available. The formula illustrates elemental needs; this is not a synthesis recipe or a balanced biochemical reaction.

Keep actual observations, published findings and invented model cases labeled separately. If a source or required equipment is unavailable, pause that part with a teacher; do not invent results.

  1. Inventory elements in the proposed building block and available inputs.
  2. Identify the missing element if sugar is the only input.
  3. Draw a system model with sugar-derived carbon skeletons, a nitrogen source, other needed inputs, products and outputs.
  4. Explain how repeated assembly can build larger molecules while conserving atoms.
  5. Revise “eating sugar directly becomes any protein” to include rearrangement, added elements, energy and biological processes.
