Build the idea

Photosynthesis uses light energy to build energy-rich organic molecules from carbon dioxide and water, with oxygen released. Matter atoms are rearranged; sunlight contributes energy, not carbon atoms. The familiar net equation summarizes many reactions and does not show each biochemical step or identify the origin of every oxygen atom by itself.

Net model: 6 CO₂ + 6 H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6 O₂. Build colored tokens for C, H and O. The equation is a simplified overall account, not a claim that a plant makes only glucose or that all reaction steps happen at once.

Keep actual observations, published findings and invented model cases labeled separately. If a source or required equipment is unavailable, pause that part with a teacher; do not invent results.

Do the work

  1. Count each element on both sides and construct a conserved-atom model.
  2. Draw a leaf boundary with matter arrows for carbon dioxide, water and oxygen.
  3. Add a separate light-energy arrow and label increased stored chemical energy in organic products.
  4. Explain why replacing carbon dioxide with sunlight tokens violates matter accounting.
  5. Use the model to predict a limitation when light or carbon dioxide is restricted, without inventing a universal growth rate.
