Earth changes on different timescales. A sudden earthquake can move the ground quickly. Weathering and erosion can gradually change rock or move sediment. A single still picture often cannot show how long a change took, so we need captions, before/after records or repeated observations from more than one source.

Reading cards to verify with the linked USGS resources: earthquakes involve a sudden release of energy as rocks slip along a fault; erosion moves weathered material through agents such as water and wind. A classroom photograph sequence or teacher-selected source must include its order and context before it is used as evidence of fast or slow change.
Keep actual observations, published findings and invented model cases labeled separately. If a source or required equipment is unavailable, pause that part with a teacher; do not invent results.
Materials and preparation
Adult-selected USGS texts/images, paper, optional sediment tray demonstration managed by an adult.
Grade-level scope
Compare qualitative timescales; do not require numerical time calculations or teach that all erosion is slow.
Do the work
- Read or view an adult-selected earthquake account and an erosion account from the sources. Name what changed in each.
- Find the words or ordered images that give evidence about timing. Do not guess timing from appearance alone.
- Make a quick-change/slow-change display using observations from both sources.
- Compare with a teacher demonstration of gently flowing water moving loose sediment in a tray, labeling the tray as a model.
- Explain which part of the real process the tray shows and why the model’s classroom time does not establish the duration of a landscape change.

Access, support and extension
Offer read-aloud support, labeled diagrams, larger print or an oral/recorded explanation while preserving the scientific reasoning. A partner or teacher can handle physical manipulation while the learner plans, records and interprets. Use a teacher-provided measured dataset only when its provenance and limitations are explicit; it does not replace conducting an investigation when that is the assessed practice. For greater independence, remove prompts and ask learners to compare a second explanation or test another justified revision.
